In last weekโ€™s post, we have established that ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ-๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฉ๐—– ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜† (both demand for โ€“ and supply of capital)

And that figures have not really changed in the past 10 years (even if anecdotal evidence suggests differently).

Now we could say ๐˜€๐—ผ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜? After all, women are over-represented in HR or healthcare, so it may be normal to have industries where they are less present.I guess there are at least three answers to the โ€œso what?โ€ question when it comes to innovation financing:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Innovation financing is not just another vertical โ€“ this is the hear of the vitality of our societies
๐Ÿ‘‰ Experience suggests there is merit in gender (and actually any kind) of diversity. As we know, the enemy of innovation is groupthink, of which there is plenty in our industry.
๐Ÿ‘‰ If the US are our role model when it comes to VC financing, Europe is lagging behind. That in itself is a give-away.

So, if we see it as something we need to improve on, what can we do about it?
๐Ÿ‘‰ Well, ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฎ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ there is a topic at hand is a start (vs โ€œnothing to see, nothing to doโ€).
๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€: we should not expect women entrepreneurs to behave necessarily like men. So, great if they shout the loudest, but this is not the only way to show leadership.
๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ for women. I am not talking about free childcare or flexible working hours/location (even if these are also relevant). I am talking about the way we run our firms: attitude expectations; afterwork entertainment; etc). Bearing in mind that the women we have, the less the divide problem will be.

From a practical standpoint:
โœ… What I see in many of the companies I am involved with is ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ, ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป. This is not about lowering standards. It is about being wary of our own cognitive biases. And, more systematically, give priority to raw talent and drive vs. experience. Btw, bringing more women as part of teams also helps answer the challenge of a shrinking workforce pool.
โœ… This ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐˜€: many of the Boards I joined are dominated by men (me included!). I have encouraged all companies to bring in womenโ€™s talent as part of the Board for all the reasons mentioned previously.
