In last weekโs post, we have established that ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ-๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ (both demand for โ and supply of capital)
And that figures have not really changed in the past 10 years (even if anecdotal evidence suggests differently).
Now we could say ๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐? After all, women are over-represented in HR or healthcare, so it may be normal to have industries where they are less present.I guess there are at least three answers to the โso what?โ question when it comes to innovation financing:
๐ Innovation financing is not just another vertical โ this is the hear of the vitality of our societies
๐ Experience suggests there is merit in gender (and actually any kind) of diversity. As we know, the enemy of innovation is groupthink, of which there is plenty in our industry.
๐ If the US are our role model when it comes to VC financing, Europe is lagging behind. That in itself is a give-away.
So, if we see it as something we need to improve on, what can we do about it?
๐ Well, ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฎ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ there is a topic at hand is a start (vs โnothing to see, nothing to doโ).
๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ ๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ฒ๐
๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐: we should not expect women entrepreneurs to behave necessarily like men. So, great if they shout the loudest, but this is not the only way to show leadership.
๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ for women. I am not talking about free childcare or flexible working hours/location (even if these are also relevant). I am talking about the way we run our firms: attitude expectations; afterwork entertainment; etc). Bearing in mind that the women we have, the less the divide problem will be.
From a practical standpoint:

What I see in many of the companies I am involved with is ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ, ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป. This is not about lowering standards. It is about being wary of our own cognitive biases. And, more systematically, give priority to raw talent and drive vs. experience. Btw, bringing more women as part of teams also helps answer the challenge of a shrinking workforce pool.

This ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฒ๐พ๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ผ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐: many of the Boards I joined are dominated by men (me included!). I have encouraged all companies to bring in womenโs talent as part of the Board for all the reasons mentioned previously.
