The rise of hypergrowth companies

Weโ€™ve seen OpenAIโ€™s amazing progress. We now have Anthropic: Anthropic seems to be bettering OpenAI by prioritising corporate needs โ€“ and corporates love it (OpenAI is now in โ€œcode redโ€). Every quarter, Anthropic is revising its ARR numbers upwards โ€“ which are now planned for $45bn this year (not $30bn like on the chart below โ€“ already outdated). For a 5-year-old company!

Of course, there is the AI hype among investors. But there is also ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—น๐˜† ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€ and, as a result, ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐— &๐—” ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€โ€™ ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ.

A couple of ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€ in the last month:
๐Ÿ‘‰ SAP bought Prior Labs for c. $1bn. It is now preparing to invest another $1bn in the business. Prior Labs is an 18-month-old startup, which raised only โ‚ฌ9m before (in pre-seed in February 2025 from Balderton Capital โ€“ and a bunch of entrepreneurs). From 0 to $1bn in 18 months, thatโ€™s unheard of.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Anysphere (the developer of Cursor โ€“ led by Brit Michael Truell) has agreed to be acquired by SpaceX for $60bn, after raising $3.4bn from the likes of Accel, Coatue, etc. From 0 to $60bn in not even 4 years from inception. Waow.

There are quite a few profound implications:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Startup companies can grow at a pace ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ (๐—น๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜†). AI companies have become the UFOs of the venture world.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Even if business models are shifting like moving sands, ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฟ๐˜† for the sort of skills innovative AI startups build.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Europe seems to be holding its own vs. the US, at least in some categories such as tabular foundational model (SAP/Prior Labs), physical AI (AMI Labs) or vertical AI (Lovable, Legora) โ€“ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜โ€™๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜€๐—ผ ๐—ฎ ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜.
๐Ÿ‘‰ And hopefully SAPโ€™s example of splashing $1bn on an 18-month-old startup will give license to other European corporates (ASML, Dassault Systemes, etc) to do the same โ€“ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐˜‚๐—ณ๐—ณ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—ฆ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฉ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต ๐—˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ.

In this frenetic environment, Between the US temptation for laissez faire and Chinaโ€™s insistence on โ€œcore socialist valuesโ€, Europe must become a beacon of effective AI regulation. So far, it hasnโ€™t succeeded, but then again Microsoft never succeeded first time round.
