The rise of hypergrowth companies
Weโve seen OpenAIโs amazing progress. We now have Anthropic: Anthropic seems to be bettering OpenAI by prioritising corporate needs โ and corporates love it (OpenAI is now in โcode redโ). Every quarter, Anthropic is revising its ARR numbers upwards โ which are now planned for $45bn this year (not $30bn like on the chart below โ already outdated). For a 5-year-old company!
Of course, there is the AI hype among investors. But there is also ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐น๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฏ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ and, as a result, ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ผ๐๐ ๐ &๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐โ ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ.
A couple of ๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฒ๐

๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ๐ in the last month:
SAP bought Prior Labs for c. $1bn. It is now preparing to invest another $1bn in the business. Prior Labs is an 18-month-old startup, which raised only โฌ9m before (in pre-seed in February 2025 from Balderton Capital โ and a bunch of entrepreneurs). From 0 to $1bn in 18 months, thatโs unheard of.
Anysphere (the developer of Cursor โ led by Brit Michael Truell) has agreed to be acquired by SpaceX for $60bn, after raising $3.4bn from the likes of Accel, Coatue, etc. From 0 to $60bn in not even 4 years from inception. Waow.
There are quite a few profound implications:
Startup companies can grow at a pace AI companies have become the UFOs of the venture world.
Even if business models are shifting like moving sands, ๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐พ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ต๐๐ป๐ด๐ฟ๐ for the sort of skills innovative AI startups build.
Europe seems to be holding its own vs. the US, at least in some categories such as tabular foundational model (SAP/Prior Labs), physical AI (AMI Labs) or vertical AI (Lovable, Legora)
๐ And hopefully SAPโs example of splashing $1bn on an 18-month-old startup will give license to other European corporates (ASML, Dassault Systemes, etc) to do the same โ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐ณ๐ณ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฆ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ ๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป ๐บ๐ถ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฟ.
In this frenetic environment, Between the US temptation for laissez faire and Chinaโs insistence on โcore socialist valuesโ, Europe must become a beacon of effective AI regulation. So far, it hasnโt succeeded, but then again Microsoft never succeeded first time round.
