VC has always been about finding good companies to invest in.

But from a niche industry populated by specialist investors generating above average returns, it has now morphed into an industry where This can only end up in tears.

We can point to a variety of ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜€:

๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—œ ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜‡๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜‚๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด โ€“ It reminds me of the โ€œNew Economyโ€ (c. 1999) at the time of the internet. The fact that 2/3 of the investment goes into AI is clearly overdone. Ditto for companies which are unicorns from the get-go. And the combination of the two is spelling trouble, with nearly 2/3 of venture investment in 2026 YTD going into deals of more than $1bn (the chart below).

๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐—ฉ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜† โ€“ Valuations are mainly comparables-based, i.e. previous valuations are baked into the next ones, until the markets realize this is unsustainable. Will SpaceX (which has now dipped against its IPO price) be the moment when markets turn? Will Helsingโ€™s valuation (higher than Anduril on a revenue multiple basis) be the straw that breaks the camelโ€™s back?

๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—”๐—–๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ป โ€“ The 2021 SPAC lessons are pretty clear: public investors only support companies which are revenue generating, with a clear path to profitability. Whereas SPACs should be a useful tool to bring experienced management talent into younger companies, they are instead used as a last resort financing tool.

In all this, investors (and their LPs) are getting mixed up:

โžก๏ธ ๐—ฉ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜ƒ๐˜€. ๐— ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜‚๐—บ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด โ€“ Many investors nowadays rely on finding new investors willing to pay more, i.e. momentum. Venture investing is about helping a companyโ€™s innovation find its market fit. Hype markets are kind to momentum investors; it doesnโ€™t mean these investors are building value sustainable during a market downturn.

โžก๏ธ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ฉ๐—– ๐˜ƒ๐˜€ ๐—š๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜„๐˜๐—ต ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—น โ€“ Large investors are welcome, in particular in Europe where investors have historically starved companies for money. The real question is whether these investors finance companies which are already over the hump (mini-PE), or whether large investments are also available for companies which low or even pre-revenues (which admittedly is what European deeptech needs).
