Accelโs new report on โFounder Factory 2026โ makes interesting reading.
The argument centres on This is at the core of โEuropeโ becoming investable, including for US funds. Hopefully, European institutional investors (pension funds and insurance companies โ which fund European VCs) will caught on soon enough.
Having said that ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ณ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต: of the 28 unicorns mentioned, only 5 can be classified as deeptech (Skype, Celonis, Babylon, Mellanox Technologies and Improbable), i.e. less than 20%. And in that list, one has gone bust (Baylon); another has a rather shaken history (the aptly named Improbable); and one is out of Israel (Mellanox), a market which has a completely dynamics compared to the mainstream European market (proximity to the US). So, one could argue that the success flywheel effect is demonstrably relevant for fintech, internet/ecommerce, advertising etc (all consumer-based industries) but hasnโt happened (yet) for European deeptech (more of a B2B market).
๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฒ, particularly if we include (legitimately) AI as part of deeptech. European deeptech unicorns include:
๐ Foundational AI: Amilabs (alternative AI) ; Ineffable Intelligence; Mistral; Recursive Intelligence (all LLM models)
๐ Applied (or vertical) AI: Isomorphic Labs (drug discovery); Legora (legal); Lovable (coding)
๐ Unmanned vehicles: Helsing (drones); Quantum Systems (drones); Wayve (AV software)
๐ Robotics: NEURA Robotics (industrial robots surfing the humanoid craze)
๐ Quantum and energy: IQM Quantum Computers (QC); newcleo (SMR)
If all goes according to plan, ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐, who in turn will have the money, expertise, network and appetite to invest in more IP-based plays.
Shame that many of these companies are primarily-backed by US investors. There is however ๐ฎ ๐ด๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐น๐ถ๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐ด๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ผ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ฑ, such as Balderton Capital, Cathay Innovation, Hiro Capital, Noteus Partners or Prima Materia (Daniel Ek of Spotify fame). There are also the European investors who got in the action on US stocks and may now try their luck with European companies. European winners of the SpaceX IPO for instance include ACE Ventures, Hedosophia, Redstone VC, as well as a bunch of HNWIs or family offices.
