๐€๐ˆ ๐…๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ

Some of you took exceptions to law weekโ€™s comments on the AI bubble. In short, I am a luddite, who doesnโ€™t get it.

Below is a chart from Coatueโ€™s latest East Meets West (EMW) conference (June 2025) which makes the argument AI is a new wave of innovation. And it is.

My beef is as follows:
โฉ Using the AI mantra ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฒ, without reminding the audience of the limitations of the current technology.
โฉ ๐Œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  AI technology. Take AI applied to health: Microsoft touts it can โ€œoutperform doctorsโ€. The reality is more prosaic: AI come ups with diagnostics much more cost-efficiently. Of course, AI still misses at least 15% of cases (today). AI will be deployed first for cost reasons, letโ€™s have an honest discussion about it.
โฉ ๐Ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  the impact of โ€œAIโ€ short-term (and in the process burning $ billions of investorsโ€™ money). Of course, longer term, AI (and I am not even sure this will resemble โ€œAIโ€ as we know it today) will change the world. Just like the PC, mobile or the cloud did.

Yes, we can make the argument that this time the speed is different. In an exponential world, AIโ€™s impact will show through more quickly.

However:
โฉ The market is ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  all models โ€“ see Coatueโ€™s presentation ending up with โ€œInnovation is everywhereโ€ (no kidding, duh). AI is mingled with data centres, GPU rental (e.g. CoreWeave), crypto (e.g. Circle), etc
โฉ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  is clearly out of whack โ€“ OpenAI valued at 30x revenues, Thinking Machines Lasโ€™s valuation at $10bn for a seed round and no plans, etc.
โฉ Much of the hype is driven by ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐Ÿ-๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  corporates โ€“ much of the investment in โ€œfoundational modelsโ€ is from the very companies which will benefit the most from deploying these models over eye-wateringly expensive (and wasteful) data centres.

What are the smart investors to do?
โฉ ๐’๐ข๐ญ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ the foundational AI craze - See Balderton and Cathay Innovation new (and large!) funds focused on AI applications. This is not dependent on AGI, but the pragmatic approach that AI will be good enough in many cases. In short, the cost argument, but you will also have the productivity or staff augmentation argument, etc.
โฉ ๐†๐จ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ง๐ž๐ฑ๐ญ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฏ๐ž of physical AI โ€“ AI has been fed all the worldโ€™s digital data for training. Next is to feed it data from the real world. There is plenty of value in financing embodied AI.
โฉ ๐…๐ข๐ง๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฉ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฌ โ€“ Much of the reluctance of enterprises to deploy is down to their inability to tap their own data. Remember data lakes? There is still plenty to do.
